Morning Star StudentEnrichment

All of our students have an opportunity to become involved in the many special programs offered at Morning Star School.

Hand-Chimes Choir - There is both a junior and senior Hand-Chimes Choir, which allows students the opportunity to develop music skills and showcase these skills during our school-wide Masses, as well as various functions in our community.

Sign Language - There is also a Sign Language enrichment class where the students not only learn necessary signs for daily communication, but also the signs for many songs. The hand-chimes choir and our signers showcase their talents at our annual Christmas program.

Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts - These programs meet on Friday during the school day. Students involved in our scouting program take great delight and pride in the badges they earn and receive in our annual Court of Awards. There are also camping opportunities for the boys and a "Father-Daughter Dance" and "Moms and Daughters" night out for the girls.

Best Buddies - Morning Star also has a Best Buddies program for our high school age students. This is a national program that 'buddies' regular high school students and students with special needs of the same age. Our program is in conjunction with Bishop Moore High School. The group meets for monthly meetings and activities after school at Morning Star. Best Buddies also sponsors family picnics, dances, parties, an annual talent show and a prom that the students are invited to attend during the year.

Athletics & Special Olympics - Many of our students are involved in athletic programs (swimming, gymnastics, basketball, horseback riding, golf, soccer, bowling and track and field) through area Special Olympics, special recreation programs and parent-organized groups.

Daily Prayer - We begin and end each school day at Morning Star School with prayer. Students also attend Mass on a weekly basis at St. Charles Borromeo Church. Prayer services held throughout the school year help us focus on the seasons and events of the Catholic church.

Morning Star StudentTherapies

Morning Star has always had a strong reading and phonics program. While we do not have a speech therapist on staff, all of our reading teachers use phonics on a daily basis to help teach sight words. Using phonics strengthens a student's ability to read, listen to slight changes in words, understand rhyming words and help with diction and pronuciation.

Orange County Public Schools has a person assigned to arrange for public school services for non-public school students. Therefore, whenever a student is considering Morning Star, we refer him or her to that person for testing. Once they are tested through the county and demonstrate they need therapies, speech, physical and/or occupational therapy is set up through the closest public school — elementary, middle or high school. A school bus picks up the students on the school grounds and brings them back after their therapy session. We have a very good rapport with the public schools in having students transported back and forth for therapy.

Morning Star StudentIf a family has insurance that will pay for therapy, there are a number of private therapists who also come to the school. One organization that visits the school for therapy is Children's First. Children's First is located on Edgewater Drive just one mile from the school. They also have scholarships available for specific therapies.

Many of the techniques used in speech and/or occupational therapy are also used by our classroom teachers. This is especially true of our adaptive PE class which develops both fine and gross motor movements along with balance, coordination, confidence and self-esteem building.
